    Global Basics: Social Media

    Social media are digital media and methods (cf. social software) that enable users to network on the Internet, i.e. to exchange information with one another and to create and distribute media content individually or in a defined community or openly in society. The term "social media" also serves to describe a new expectation of communication and is always used in the plural to distinguish it from the term medium for a printed work or a broadcast channel. This is intended to signal that it is more than just individual media or channels.Social interactions and collaborative writing (sometimes referred to as "collaboration" in reference to the English term) in social media are becoming increasingly important and are transforming media monologues (one to many).They can also support the rapid dissemination of knowledge, opinions and other information. In contrast to traditional mass media, there is little or no social divide between sender and recipient (sender-receiver model). Text, images, audio or video are used as means of communication. The joint creation, editing and distribution of content, supported by interactive applications, up to viewing, reading and understanding, is also emphasized by the term Web 2.0.
